American citizens stopping in Beijing China on way to Mongolia

There are two of us - (American Citizens) that will be flying to Mongolia to meet a tour group. On the way over to Mongolia we stop in China for 6 hours - then on our way back to the United States we will stop in China again for 16 hours (overnight) arrive 8:10 pm - depart China 12:00 pm next day. Will we need a Visa? Can we leave the airport to perhaps get a hotel room or eat dinner without a Visa? Thank you for your help.

The 6 hour stop you may or may not be permitted to leave the airport depending on how customs . The longer stop should be fine to leave the airport due to your hotel stay.

Beijing is much more lenient than Shanghai which is a stickler about short transits under 8-10 hours
