The 144 hours is not in Timatic (the system airlines use at the airport). If you don't have a visa or an onward flight to a third country you will be denied boarding at your origin.

It now appears that the 144 hours visa free transit has not been implemented in GZ, however, you can use the existing 72 hours visa free transit currently in force providing you have an onward flight to a third country. There are certain constraints to this facility and would recommend advise from either the airline, consular section of the Chinese Embassy or Visa resource centres.
