About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Visa Free-I’ve been reading on Trip Advisor that the 144 hour visa free entry can not be relied on.

Apparently many people have been turn away from entering China (even though they’re eligible for the 144 hour visa free) with no reason given. Meaning they’ve had to stay in the Airport and not allowed to clear customs and immigration. Is this something that many people have encountered?

There have been reports that passengers with short stays, or same-day transfers, or a transit within 24 hours but without confirmed hotel accommodation have been refused entry and sent to direct air-side transfer (not allowed to enter China/leave the airport). But this is for 24 hour direct transit, NOT for 144 hours transit without visa.

Rob is correct. Under 24 hours in Shanghai without hotel reservation is what is causing the problem.
