About:Chinese Embassy in Qatar

hello Sir. Am from Nigeria but a resident of Qatar

please do I need a bank statement to back up my document before applying for a tourist visa to China.

As far as I know, you don't have to provide bank statement for the application of L type. If you still worry about this, you can call the embassy in Qatar to confirm this beforehand.
