About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

What about the outbound?

I'm looking at flights with the route of Chicago ORD to Beijing PEK and hoping to stay in Beijing for less than 72 hours through the 72 hour free transit exemption and then PEK to Hong Kong HKG and staying in Hong Kong a few days. My way home is HKG connecting in PEK to ORD. Will I be okay doing the 72 hour free transit exemption because my inbound is not connecting in mainland China but coming direct from ORD (country/region 1) to PEK and then to HKG (country/region 3) or will my outbound home from HKG connecting back in PEK impact the ability to do a free transit exemption? Thanks.

That's no problem if you are flying ORD-PEK-HKG then HKG-PEK-ORD. If you are flying ORD-HKG-PEK then PEK-HKG-ORD you'll have a big problem. Also there is no 72-hour transit in Beijing anymore as it has been replaced by 144-hour transit.
