Hotel Reservations Required?

I am an American, and plan to travel as a tourist around China for 40 days. When I apply for a visa, will I be required to show proof of hotel reservations for all 40 days?
(It will be difficult for me to pre-book my hotels, as I am visiting many cities and cannot 100% guarantee that my hotel stays will perfectly match my itinerary schedule.)

Hi, you can only show the proof of hotel reservation for the first stop of your travel in mainland China. No need to provide hotel reservations for all 40 days.
