Cruise stops 144 hour visa

We are visiting in Sept 2019. Will will overnight in port in Shanghai and overnight in port in Beijing. It looks as though the 144 hour visa would work for us but how would we get hold of it. Could we get one on the ship as we will be taking the ships trips into the cities or do we need to go to an office in Beijing?

Shanghai and Beijing layover automatically limits you to 24 hours in China, so you cannot get 144 hr free transit if the total layover time in China is over 24 hours. Try to apply for a visa in advance.
