About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Can we use the 72 hour no visa system twice in one trip

Can we fly from the US to Shanghai and onward to another Asian country and use the 72 hour free rule at the beginning of our trip and then fly from another Asian country to Bejing, stay for 72 hours and then leave for the US and use the no visa rule again?

Yes, you can use the free transit system twice in Beijing by traveling like that. Nice trip.

Instead of leaving for another Asian country could you leave to Hong Kong (which I know doesn't require a VISA as a standalone trip-just not sure how it works with Shanghai and the 72 hour no visa)

You can. The same goes for Macau which has its own immigration control.

The rule only restricts you from leaving China to the same country that you arrived from. It does not prohibit you reentering china from the same country you left it to. Macau and Hong Kong while neighbors of China are not actually parts of China. The exit stamp you will get leaving Beijing signals your ability to return from any country.
