About:China Visa on Arrival

I've just replaced a teacher on a school trip to China from the UK

which leaves in 3 days, can I get an emergency visa in Beijing when I arrive?

You won't be able to board your flight without a visa. Two options: (1) change your flight to UK-Beijing-Hong Kong-UK or similar, to qualify for 144 hours transit without visa. (2) add in a one day side-trip to Hong Kong (UK-Beijing-Hong Kong-Beijing-UK). That would also qualify for 144 hours transit without visa each time you enter China.

You cannot if s/he does not have an visa approval letter which can only be issued to VIPs or certain people with arranged jobs in China.
