Do I have to purchase train tickets before I arrive in China or can I purchase day of travel.

It depends on your route. For some short route with frequent rides, the ticket availability is usually OK. you can choose to buy it after your arrival. For some long distance trips or popluar tourist cities, the seats are often fully booked. So it is very important to book a seat in advance.2
