About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

visa for stopping in for 9 hours in shanghai

My wife and I are cruising from Dubai to Yokohama on 31 march 18. Last 2 stops before Yokohama are Hong Kong and Shanghai. While we understand we do not need a visa for Hong Kong, being British citizens, it does not appear to be so for Shanghai. Given we will spend only 9 hours in Shanghai, where do we stand? we have received conflicting advices.
thanks
NOEL

You are eligible for 24 hour direct transit in Shanghai. You are advised to show their hotel booking confirmations if you want to leave the airport.

Whether 9 hours is enough time to make you connection I don't know. However no visa is needed if your next stop is to a third country (other than HK again) within 144 hours. Id suggest booking at least a night so you can rest or explore Shanghai. Since you are arriving by Ship and departing by plane the not having a hotel reservation shouldn't be an Issue, that is for air to air connections.
