About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Visa Confusion! Hong Kong, 2 countries, then Beijing!

Hi! We are flying direct from USA to Hong Kong about 2.5 days (I understand that we won't need a visa for this, right?). We fly from HK to Malaysia, then on to Thailand, and then from Thailand to Beijing. In Beijing, we will arrive on a Saturday at 3:50pm (1550) and our flight back to the USA leaves on a Tuesday at 4:25pm (1625) - this is 72 hours and 35 minutes. Two questions: 1. How strict is the 72 hour policy (we are 35 minutes over). 2. Do we need to count our time in HK towards total time in China?

There's no 72-hour transit anymore, only 144-hour transit, of which you are definitely qualified.

And no, time spent in HK does not count toward time spent in Mainland China. US citizens are visa exempt for 90 days in HK.
