About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

I am traveling roundtrip from US to Hong Kong. From Hong Kong I plan to go to Beijing

I will be in Beijing for 2 days then flying to Hanoi Vietnam. Do I apply for this visa-free transit?

That's fine if your HKG-PEK and PEK-HAN flights are nonstop.

Yes they are nonstop. I purchased on different airlines. How long should I give myself at the airport in Hong Kong while heading to Beijing to apply to this transit visa?
Thank you!

When you board the flight in HK, you need to inform the airlines that you want to use the free transit in BJ. Then go to the transit counter at Beijing airport to apply for the free transit.

It says in order to apply I need a passport and visa to a third country? Not sure what the via to a third country is implying? For Vietnam, I was told to get the visa at the airport when I arrive.

If so, you don't need to show the visa to a third country for that.
