About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Hotel reservation needed?

Hi, are hotel reservations needed for this visa free transit? We are planning to stay with friends while in Beijing (who live at a hotel residence) and were not sure whether we needed to have an official reservation or invitation letter.

We arrive at 2:00 am on March 19 and will leave at 3:30 am on March 25. Since the time for our 144 hours will begin at 12:01 am on March 20, it is our understanding that we are within the 144 hour limit. Is this correct?

Beijing measures the 144 hours from scheduled arrival time to scheduled departure time. You are advised to change your flight, otherwise, you may need to apply for a visa in advance. You don't have to have hotel reservation for applying for the free transit.

Beijing's 144-hour period starts from the day after the day of entry so you can stretch it to a maximum of 167 hours.
