144 hour visa exemption

If I fly from Vancouver BC [Canada] to Shanghai, and return to San Francisco Ca [USA], will that qualify me for the 144 hour exemption?

Thank you! This saves cash, otherwise a flight to Hong Kong would be required. $300 for a Visa is silly, when a passport only costs $100.00. [$150 to China, $150 to agent to process Visa]
