About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Enter shanghai twice

I want to fly to Shanghai from USA
Then Stay for 5 days,
Fly to Bali, Indonesia from Shanghai for a few days
Fly back to Shanghai and stay for another 5 days then back to the USA
So basically
USA - Shanghai
Shanghai to Bali
Bali to Shanghai
Shanghai to USA
Will I able be able to enter shanghai without a visa the second time?

As a heads up, I just tried to do a similar thing and was denied boarding on my flight. Apparently some airlines in the US don’t recognize the 144 hour exemption and won’t let you board your flight without a visa, despite what the Chinese government websites say about the 144 hour exemption. Call the airlines in advance and get specifics on what the AIRLINE requires so you can avoid losing all your money to American Airlines like I just did! Don’t trust the 144 hour exemption.

I think the problem is with the airline crew you worked with.
The only reason that airline checks your visa is to make sure that the country you're flying to will receive you.
The crew may not be familiar with the policy and thus falsely believe that you will be denied entry.
Otherwise, it is not appropriate nor suitable for airline to refuse you from boarding, and you may seek refund or even legal assistance if necessary.

You need to initiate court proceedings against AA. This route is fine for visa-free transit and AA's incompetent ground staff clearly did not read the rules.
