How to travel via public transport in China when Passport is submitted for renewal?

Hello,
My Passport is due for renewal. I reside in Shenzhen & need to submit my current Passport in person (as required) at the Guangzhou Consulate.

Will I be able to buy tickets to Shenzhen in bus/train? The public transport personnel always ask for Passport to issue tickets.

I'm thinking the Consulate will give me a receipt stating my current Passport is submitted with them. Will that receipt suffice as identity for ticket issuance?
