With a five day visa from HK (i'm UK citizen) can i stay with friend or has to be hotel in Shenzhen?

I want to travel to Shenzhen to see a friend. I am planning to fly to HK from London and obtain a five day VOA.
Can I stay with this friend and register with the Police independently or do I have to stay in a hotel?
