About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Do I need a Travelers Visa?/ US passport

Traveling to Chengdu for 2-3 days and returning to the US? or is the 72 hours only available to those who will be transitioning to a 3rd county?

Of course, transit without visa is only available for those in transit to a third country.
