About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Would this work for 72 hour entry?

I'm flying Sydney - Hong Kong, staying for a few days, then Hong Kong to Chengdu for less than three days. After Chengdu I have a flight back to HK and then onto Sydney again. Would this count?

No. Hong Kong-China-Hong Kong obviously isn't a transit, and therefore transit without visa does not apply.

Even if I don't leave HK airport? I'm flying back to HK to go straight back to Sydney

It doesn't matter. Chinese immigration will only see your trip as HKG-CTU-HKG.
