We are traveling throughout China.  What is the best way to communicate with my family in the US?  The best way to communicate with our tour guides in China?

You can buy a sim card in China and call your family and contact your guides. If you got the mobile web or a wifi, you could contact your family and guide through some social media app, such as Wechat, which is very popular in China.
