About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Canadian Traveler , layover in Pudong

I Will be flying into Shanghai at 5am with 6 hour layover, want to leave airport and explore a bit,
I would need to apply for 72 hour visa in this case correct?
Also , on my way back from the Maldives, I have two layovers in China
1 In Kunming and 1 in Nanjing, my layovers in both cities are max of 5 hours total, so I dont require any additional visa correct?

Thanks for your tips
:)

Leaving the airport seems to be no longer possible if you don't have a hotel reservation. As a Canadian you should look into the multi-year visa (valid for the life of your passport) if you really want to leave the airport.

There are reports of people being denied the ability to leave the airport on layovers of less than 8 and in some circumstances less than 24 if you don't have a hotel reservation in advance. For the return TWOV is allowed as long as the departure from Nanjing is less than 24 hours from scheduled arrival in Kunming.
