Am I eligible for the 72 hour visa? USA --> Thailand --> Hong Kong --> Shanghai --> USA

I'm flying from USA --> Thailand --> Hong Kong --> Shanghai --> USA and I'll be in Shanghai for less than 24 hours with a ticket already booked from HKG --> PVG and PVG --> USA. Am I eligible for a 72 hour visa?

Hong Kong to Shanghai to USA is allowed under the 144 hour Transit Without Visa as Hong Kong is considered a separate country from China. USA to Thailand to will depend where you stop since there are no non-stop flights from the US to Thailand. No visa required in Hong Kong for US passport.
