Staying in Shanghai

If I am planning on staying in Shanghai and Nanjing can I use the visa and fly in to Shanghai and exit from Shanghai? Or do I need to fly out from a third place like Hong Kong?

If you want to use free transit in China, you should travel like country A - Shanghai and Nanjing (within 144 hours) - country B. If you have regular visa for China, you don't need to travel like that.
