About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

visa waiver?

I am an airline employee (not flight crew) and would like to take a short break to PVG from DFW. I would arrive on Sat. and leave on Mon. It would be a total of approx 50 hours. The idea would be to stay in the city for 2 nights then come back. Also if return was not the same as in LAX perhaps would that make a difference. I appreciate any assistance as it is next weekend I am thinking about doing this.

If you will go to a third country or region rather than USA after transiting in Shanghai, and you have confirmed tickets, there is no need to apply for the visa because you can use 144 hr free transit policy.

DFW-PVG-LAX isn't transit so you need a visa. Also stand-by onward ticket holders are not eligible for visa transit even if they are going to a third country.
