can i go out of the airport in Beijing on transit

My plan is to fly from Amsterdam to Zhangjiajie. I will have to change planes in Beijing. We will have a stop of 7 hours there. Can I go out of the airport to do some shopping and go back in again? I will of course apply for a visum for my whole 3 weeks trip in China.
