Do I qualify for the 72 hour waiver via Beijing for 2 nights?

I am flying from South America to NY then to Bangkok (thru' Beijing for 2 hours as it is an immediate connecting flight) and then my return is back from Bangkok to Beijing (layover of 2 days) then Beijing to New York then NY to South America. Will the 72 hour visa free requirement apply in my case?

Yes, you can enjoy the visa free transit! But the first time is 24h visa free transit.

Thank you! What is the process? Is there an application form that I need to fill out? Or do I just inform the airline at the time of check in?

For the 24h visa free, you just need to apply for it upon arrival;
For the 72h, yes, you need to inform the airline when boarding, they will give you a card to fill. Then, you can take the card to apply for the 72h permit upon arrival.
