About:Visa Policy of China

I am travelling on a cruise ship from Dubai to Japan with msc....

have been told I may need a visa for shanghi and Sri Lanka.....I cannot get answers anywhere as to whether I DO need hem and if I do, WHERE to get them....please someone help me, I am a British passsport holder

Could you please your detailed travel route?
Based on what I know, if you travel like country A-Shanghai (144 hours)-country B, you can use the 144 hour free transit there. No need to apply for a visa then.
