About:China Visa on Arrival

I’m coming on a short trip to Beijing and thought I could use the 144 hour visa

but I don’t understand the third destination request. I would be flying round trip nonstop from Detroit.

That's not transit, so you need a visa. You have to fly from Beijing to a country/region other than the US to stay for 144 hours.
