John, in principle, you need to go there in person. If you can’t show up for medical situation, you can tell it to the consular officers honestly and see if there is any way to solve this problem.

Thank you James. I couldn't find the renewal form for chinese passport online. Do you know if there is there a link for it, or do I have to go to an embassy to pick up a form?

The link cannot be pasted here. You can download the form from the offical wesbite of the embassy or consulate in Canada.

I have combed through that site and only find link for visa forms and not passport forms under the page for visa and passport. Even the response email I just got from them today did not provide any link and specify HAVE TO come in person to apply. Thank you for your responses.
