I have a layover in china for about 20 hours. I am traveling from the US to Thailand.

I would like to explore the city where my layover is. Do I need a visa to leave the airport?

No, the visa is not needed and you can enjoy the 24 hours visa free policy. But if you wanna leave the airport, you should apply for the Stay Permit at the airport first. :)

Thank you so much, so I take it I would do that when I arrive in china? Where would I go? To the immigration area?

Yes, you can apply it when you arrive in China. You should complete the "embarkation/disembarkation card", together with your travel documents, boarding pass for the onward connecting flight and travel itinerary, go to the inspection counter of China Immigration Inspection to apply for 24h stay permit.
Don't worry. There are many English signs at the airport. Or you can ask help for the airport staff. They are willing to help you applying this.
