I think metro is the best way. You can take metro line 4 to Tongli and then change to a shuttle bus to the ancient town.

Is the shuttle bus from Tongli metro station to Tongli convenient? How about the frequency?

Yes, it is very convenient. The buses depart from about 06:20 to 21:40 and the interval is about 15 minutes.
