About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Followup to question I just asked re 144 hour visa free transit

I should have said my itinerary involves a stop in Hong Kong on the way to Ho Chi Minh City--that is, the flights from Shanghai to Ho Chi Minh and the return are not direct flights. Does this change anything? THANKS AGAIN!

So for transit without visa purposes, you are flying USA-China-Hong Kong and later Hong Kong-China-USA? Both of these routes are fine. You won't find up-to-date correct info on Chinese embassy or consulate sites, usually a waste of time looking.
