About:144-hour Visa-free Transit in Beijing, Tianjin & Hebei

Honolulu-->Beijing-->Siem Reap (flight connection through Shanghai)

Hi,
Would our family qualify for the 144h visa free? We would:
Fly from Honolulu into PEK on May 31
Fly to Siem Reap VIA Shanghai on June 2

We are wondering if the connecting flight via Shanghai would prevent this, even though we aren't leaving the airport?

You need a visa. Two stops in China immediately limits you to 24 hours in China unless you have a visa.

Thank you. We ended up booking a direct flight from BJ to Siem Reap (at 3am!) to take advantage of the 144 hour visa free transit. We appreciate your help. -Wendy
