About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Uk passport, travelling from UK to Shanghai by plane, staying for 3 days then leaving by cruise ship

I am a UK passport holder who is flying from UK to Shanghai Pu Dong airport and staying in Shanghai for 3 days only.
Then, I will be leaving Shanghai from Wusongkou International Cruise Terminal in Shanghai to go on a cruise.

The Cruise itinerary is Hakata (Japan), Busan (South Korea), Hong Kong, Ho Chi Minh city (Vietnam), Bangkok (Thailand) and last destination is Singapore. I then will be flying back to the UK from Changi (Singapore) airport.

My question is will 72 hour visa-free transit covers other mode of transport not just airline as I will be leaving Shanghai (China) by Cruise ship.

My other question is as long as I have all the paperwork such as airlines tickets, hotel booking for 3 day stay in Shanghai, Cruise ship itinerary and booking confirmation. Would I qualify and be able apply for 72 hour free transit once I arrive at Shanghai airport.

Hi Paul,
Thank you so much for the response and it is much appreciated.

And you have confirmed what I have been researching and checking on gov.uk and embassy website etc and my understanding is that I would be eligible for 144 hour free transit. I think that the Chinese Embassy website probably needs updating as I could not find the information about 144 hour free transit (but I could have missed it) but could find information on the 72 hour free transit. My husband even went to the embassy in person with our paperwork only to be told to apply for a tourist L type even though we don't need it.

Prior to posting my question on this website I had contacted the travel company we booked with, read the information on cruise ship website and the company that they refer you to regarding visa queries. All I wanted was a yes or a no that I would be eligible for 144 hour free transit based on my full travel itinerary (just to make make sure that I understood the conditions that you had to meet). They purposely choose not respond to the direct question asked but kept given me links to apply for a tourist L type which I said I did not need. It it is costly for tourists who do not need to apply for a tourist L type especially when they know full well that they would be covered by 144 hour free transit and I have to say I am very disappointed with their attitude.

I have to say that the information on travel guide China is extremely useful and a big thank you to all the people on here for taking the time to help others.
