About:Chinese Embassies and Consulates

I am a UK citizen doing a cruise to various part of Asia including visiting Hong Kong for 1 day

and ending up in Shanghai for a 2 day stopover. I know a 144 hour free transit should be ok for Shanghai as we fly back to the UK from there, but do i need a single entry visa for the Hong Kong stop?

No, you don’t need an entry permit for HK as UK passport holders can go there freely for a stay of not more than 180 days.

Thank you for responding so quickly. Sorry for being pedantic but the devil in in the detail and having read a few of the entries on here I just wanted to check. We are flying from Shanghai to Dubai with a transfer (2 hours) in Dubai and then Dubai to UK. Does this affect the 144 free transit? Thanks
