Correct layover time limit for direct transit exemption in Beijing

I have received differing reports of 72 or 144 hours layover limit for exemption in Beijing. Did this change recently? It still says 72 hours on the Chinese consular website, dated at least a year ago. What is my limit in Beijing without a visa? Thanks, David
