Round trip from US to Shanghai (PVG)

Hello! I just want to be certain, that if I travel round trip from DFW-PVG 30Dec-2Jan, I will be in compliance with just a valid US Passport...is this correct?

No, it is not correct. You need a visa in advance because you're not in transit. If you don't have one, you will be denied boarding at your origin.
