About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Why does it take five to 6 hours of waiting in line to leave the airport on a 24hr transit transit?

On the 16th of December 2017 I arrived in Beijing from Milan and had to wait in line for almost six hours at the counter for 24/72 hour visas in Terminal 3. My two small children were tired, but luckily managed to sleep on the floor and other passengers gave them water. How is this possible in a modern airport like Beijing? Many other travelers gave up on their day in Beijing as they ran out of time for a day trip and so had to stay in the airport. It was simply beyond ridiculous.

Because there's only one counter for people using free transit and it takes about 3-5 minutes for them to process each passenger, so that's only 12-20 people per hour. If you want to avoid the queue then get a transit visa to use the regular lanes.

Yes- the queues are truly scary. When we arrived, we were in a queue of 15, and it took 3 hours for us to get our 72 hour visa processed, averaging 5 people per hour. By the time we left, the queue was about 300 people!
