About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Hi can you clarify when the 72 hours start?

I am booking flights but before I do I just need some clarification.
I have a British passport and will be traveling from London to Beijing arriving on a Saturday at 13.05. I then plan to depart for Vietnam, the flights is at 20.35 everyday. For what day would I book my onward journey? I am a little confused as to when the 72 hours starts - from landing (Saturday 13.05) or midnight Saturday .
Secondly do I need to inform the airline of this when booking (flights are all with the same airline) or do I apply at the airport ?
Many thanks for your help.

In Beijing, the 72 hours will start at 13.05, not at midnight. You just tell the airline at the airport when they look in your passport for a Chinese visa. Say that you are "in transit without visa" and show them a copy of your onward flight.
