About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Dallas, USA to Shanghai to thailand

We are going from Dallas to Shanghai on stand-by then Shanghai to Chang Mai, Thailand via confirmed seats to leave by air...The stopover would be 30 hours. Would I need to stay in a hotel (so they can register us) or could I use an Airbnb? How long would it take at the police station? I just need to tell the airline when I board the flight and register at the shanghai airport and hotel when I arrive? correct?

Jon, dear, you won’t be able to use the free transit in Shanghai if you travel by stand-by tickets. You need to apply for a transit G type in advance.

even if the only standby ticket would be getting there...we would leave via confirmed seats!
