I will be traveling May 2018 from US to Hong Kong,

taking a train from Hong Kong to Shanghai, Flying Shanghai to US. Do I need a Visa? or is this part of the 72 hour or 144 hour visa free transit.

Your case suits for the 144h visa-free transit, so you don't need to hold a visa.
