ORD to PVG to CMB?

I plan on going to Shanghai from Chicago, stay for 2 and a half days then travel to Colombo Sri Lanka. Will that be okay for no visa transit??

Yes. You can use the 72-hour visa free transit in Shanghai if you hold US passport.
