About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

UK - Hong Kong - Shanghai - UK

Does the third party needs to come after the Shanghai transit? I'm flying from UK to Hong Kong and would like to stay in Shanghai on the way back to the UK. Could I benefit from the 144h exemption?
