About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Us citizen going from JP to Shanghai to JP

Can a us citizen traveling from japan to shanghai back to japan use the 144 hour free transit?

Of course not. It's not a transit. You need a visa or you must change your itinerary.

Transit means to a third country. Cannot be to/from the same country otherwise china is the destination.
