About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Visa Requirements urgent help please

Hi Both myself and my husband (British Citizens) are arriving from London Heathrow to Shanghai on 5th January at 17:00pm. We are then departing for Hong Kong on 6th January at 15:35pm. From Hong Kong we are travelling to Bangkok and will be returning to Shanghai on 17th January at 15:50pm. We are staying in Shanghai for less than 72 hours and flying back to London heathrow on 20th January at 10:55am. We are coming for Tourist holiday.

Do we need an entry permit for China? From our understanding we don't require a visa for this trip - is this correct?

You don't need visas. Your route qualifies for 24 hours direct transit on your way out, followed by 144 hours free transit on your way back.

Sorry - just to clarify. We are entering Shanghai 2 times- do we definately not need a visa?

How do we apply for 72 hour/144 hour free transit? Can we do this when we board the flight and fill in the landing cards?

Many thanks

When you board the flight in London and HK, you need to inform the airlines that you want to use the free transit in Shanghai. After arriving at Shanghai airport, you can go to the transit counter to apply for the free transit.
