Transit visa for short layover, Hong Kong and Shanghai

I am a US citizen leaving Vietnam to go back home and land in LAX. I have a 2 hour layover in Hong Kong and a 3 hour layover in Shanghai. Will I need to apply for a transit G, or do I automatically have a free 24 hour direct transit?

Kenzie, you will be eligible for the 24 hour direct transit in Shanghai, no need to apply for a visa for that. Nice trip.
