About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

I have a flt from Boston to Shanghai (1 hr layover Hong Kong); do I qualify for the 144 hr exemption

Since Hong Kong is my first stop in China for a connecting flight to Shanghai, I am concerned that the lay-over may disqualify me for the 144 hour exemption....since the connecting flight originated in China.

Hong Kong has separate immigration rules and doesn't count as a stop in China in this case. You will qualify for 144 visa-free transit if your onward flight from Shanghai is non-stop to a third country (not China and not Hong Kong).
