About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Layovers to Chengdu and Qingdao

I have 2 layovers. I fly from Thailand to Chengdu with a 1.5 day layover, then fly to Qingdao where I have a layover over night before flying to Uk.

In Chengdu I need to pick up a couple of things, and planned to use the 72hr free transit, or 24hr if I can't get the 72hr one... But my onward flight isn't directly to UK, but another city in China. Will this affect the stop in Chengdu? Will I still be able to get the 72/24hr free transit? And I assume I can't get another 24hr direct transit in Qingdao to stay overnight in a hotel?

Thank you for your reply.

Hi, as you have two layovers in mainland China, you cannot make use of the 72 hr free transit. So if your total layover time in Beijing and Qingdao is within 24 hours, you can enjoy the 24 hour direct transit. Otherwise, you need to apply for a visa for the trip beforehand.

Ok, so I can use the 24hr direct transit during my 1.5 day layover in Chengdu, then in Qingdao I wouldn't be able to leave the airport? Or I could make use of a hotel within the airports boundaries?

No. If you have two stops (Chengdu and Qingdao) you are limited to a total of 24 hours in China, from scheduled arrival time in Chengdu to scheduled departure time from Qingdao. If you want to stop in both cities and stay longer than 24 hours in China then you need a Chinese visa in advance. Otherwise you will be denied boarding in Thailand.

If I use the 24hr direct transit in Chengdu and am back in the airport checked in before that time is up, then in Qingdao I stay in the airport for the whole layover...? I have spent many hours in airports before and not needed a visa to just be in the airport itself, as long as I do not leave the airport building.

Or you say I need to get a tourist L, to spend 40hrs layover in Chengdu and 18hr layover in Qingdao, even if I do not leave the airport?
