About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Transit through Beijing, Shenzhen

Hello

I will be arriving at PEK Beijing Airport on Lufthansa at 09:30 in two weeks' time. I will then have 4 hours to change terminal at PEK airport then fly with China Southern Airlines to Shenzhen, where I will connect for 2 hours, then fly to Sydney, Australia.

I am a British citizen. I was planning on using the 24 hour transit but am now scared that I will need an entry permit for the 2 hours in Shenzhen airport?

Can anyone help please?!

There is no free transit in Shenzhen. So you either need to get a visa or change your flight.

Hello,

Thank you. I am still getting conflicting information on this though - as I have been told that as long as I don't go through passport control at Shenzhen I should be able to get off the plane from Beijing and be in the transit lounge for 2 hours, then take the next plane to Sydney?

Do you know if that's the case? There is a frightening lack of official information available!

You won't get as far as Shenzhen. You will be denied boarding at your origin. The information in Timatic is quite clear: "Transit without visa (TWOV) is not possible at Fuzhou (FOC), Mudanjiang (MDG), Shenzhen (SZX) and Yanji (YNJ)". A competent Lufthansa agent would not let you board your flight to Beijing. Even if you made it as far as Beijing (which you almost certainly won't), you will be refused entry to China there.

Thank you, Rob. It seems that I will have to either book a different flight to avoid Shenzhen (but keep the original brief stop in Beijing, which doesn't appear to be an issue) or apply for a transit entry permit...
